Mine Mechanical Fitter

Are you an experienced mechanical looking for an exciting opportunity to bring your skills and knowledge to our mine near our Kirkby Thore plant in Cumbria?
At British Gypsum we are looking for a mechanical fitter to work in our Engineering team at our Birkshead (underground) mine in Cumbria, reporting into the Mine Engineering manager. Your role is crucial as you'll be responsible for mechanical inspections, machinery performance as well as to provide mechanical maintenance to fixed and mobile plant. Mining experience would be great, however if you have a background in medium to heavy plant from any industry we would love to hear from you.
British Gypsum is part of Saint-Gobain Interior Solutions (SGIS). Much of Britain has been built with British gypsum. Gypsum is the vital raw material at the heart of our plaster and plasterboard, and much of it is mined, milled and made in Britain. We have been mining gypsum for more than 150 years, a heritage we're very proud of.
Our mining team works a 3 shift pattern of days, nights and afternoons as required, with flexibility to provide out of hours cover on occasion. In return for your flexibility, you will be paid a generous salary which includes shift allowances.
What we're looking for:
- Minimum Level III NVQ or equivalent in mechanical engineering or a mining-based qualification
- Excellent knowledge and experience of the maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair of Medium to Heavy Mobile plant including hydraulic systems.
- Good knowledge of maintenance, repair and installation of material handling equipment (conveying, crushing and screening) would be ideal
- An understanding of maintenance and repair of vehicles for man and materials transport
- Capable of welding and fabrication work to a high standard
- A huge focus on Health and Safety
- Excellent communication skills
- A strong team player
What you will be doing:
- Carry out planned and reactive maintenance on our equipment, static, mobile & mining plant and vehicles
- Carry out mechanical inspections and ensure reports are accurate and completed on time
- Perform on the job risk assessments and be involved in task-based risk assessments, assisting the development of Safe Operations
- Contribute actively towards continuous improvement projects, improving and sustaining operational efficiency.
- Complete accurate reports each shift, giving accurate details of work done and defects found on equipment.
